Why the Former Kaduna Governor’s Exit Isn’t Shaking the Ruling Party
The Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made it clear — they’re not losing sleep over the defection of former governor Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai’s departure from the APC, announced on Monday, was accompanied by strong criticism of the party’s current leadership. He accused the APC of abandoning the progressive ideals that once defined it. But despite his high-profile exit, the APC in Kaduna remains calm and focused on its 2027 election goals.
El-Rufai’s Reasons for Leaving APC
After eight years of leadership in Kaduna State, El-Rufai said his decision to leave the APC was driven by disillusionment with the party’s direction.
“At this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish,” El-Rufai stated.
He expressed frustration over the APC’s refusal to address critical issues raised by founding members, accusing the party of disregarding its membership and weakening its internal structures over the last two years.
“My eight-year tenure in Kaduna was dedicated to implementing progressive policies for human development. But these records count for little in the current APC,” he added.
El-Rufai’s failed bid for a ministerial position in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet following the 2023 presidential election further strained his ties with the party, contributing to his ultimate defection.
APC’s Response: “We’re Not Disturbed”
Despite El-Rufai’s influential role in the APC’s victories — including the historic 2015 presidential win and Tinubu’s 2023 election triumph — the Kaduna chapter of the party remains unshaken.
Yahaya Pate, the APC Kaduna State secretary, emphasized that the party’s growth remains strong, with new members joining daily.
“We are unperturbed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection,” Pate said in a statement. “Our focus is on delivering Kaduna State to both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani come 2027.”
Pate highlighted Governor Uba Sani’s inclusive governance as a key reason why the APC continues to attract political heavyweights in Kaduna, maintaining that one defection won’t derail the party’s momentum.
“We are not disturbed and we are not going to lose sleep over El-Rufai’s moves,” he added.

As the 2027 elections approach, the APC’s strategy in Kaduna is focused on unity and growth, brushing aside high-profile exits to maintain political dominance.
