Former England international Jamie Carragher has set the record straight following widespread criticism over his controversial comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Carragher, who referred to AFCON as a “small tournament”, has now clarified his stance, emphasizing that his words were misinterpreted and that he never intended to undermine the significance of the competition.
In an exclusive appearance on CBS Sports Golazo’s UEFA Champions League show, Carragher expressed his regret and offered a sincere explanation for the misunderstanding.
“I love debates, but what I would never want to be described as is ignorant or disrespectful. That was never my aim—whether regarding a team, a player, a continent, or a tournament,” Carragher stated.
Carragher’s Explanation: A Matter of Wording
Acknowledging the backlash, Carragher admitted that his phrasing was clumsy, leading to the misinterpretation of his point. He explained that his comments were made in the context of Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances, not as a dismissal of AFCON’s importance.
“Where I went wrong was in the way I phrased it. I was clumsy in describing AFCON as not a major tournament. My point was about Mo Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances, and I felt that—not just AFCON, but also the Asian Cup and Gold Cup—are not always considered on the same level as other tournaments.”

Carragher pointed out the historical bias in the Ballon d’Or voting process, where European competitions often carry more weight and influence.
“There are five continental competitions besides the World Cup, but not all of them carry the same weight with Ballon d’Or voters. That’s not an opinion; it’s a fact when you look at past winners over the last 40-50 years.”
A Longtime Supporter of African Football
Carragher also reaffirmed his support for Mohamed Salah and his hope to see the Egyptian forward become the first African Ballon d’Or winner since George Weah in the mid-1990s.
“I’ve always supported Salah in his quest to become the first African Ballon d’Or winner since George Weah. However, I should have been more careful with my wording.”
He also highlighted the historical roots of the Ballon d’Or and the European focus that has contributed to the unequal recognition of continental tournaments outside Europe.
“The Ballon d’Or was originally focused on European football, which may contribute to a bias in favour of European competitions. It was never my intention to offend anyone.”
