Former Lagos Speaker Obasa Challenges Impeachment in Court, Calls Removal Unlawful

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against the Assembly and its new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, contesting the legitimacy of his impeachment. Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, while out of the country, has filed a suit before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, arguing that his dismissal was unconstitutional.

Legal Battle Over Impeachment

Obasa’s lawsuit, filed on February 12, 2025, by his legal counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), asserts that his colleagues acted unlawfully by removing him while the Assembly was on recess. He is urging the court to declare his impeachment null and void, citing a violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Rules and Standing Orders of the House.

Key Reliefs Sought by Obasa

The embattled former Speaker is requesting the court to:
✅ Declare his impeachment unlawful due to improper legislative procedure.
✅ Order an accelerated hearing to resolve the case quickly.
✅ Limit the response time for the defendants to seven days.
✅ Restrict the plaintiff’s reply period to three days.

Claims of Political Conspiracy & Police Involvement

Obasa maintains that his removal was orchestrated in his absence and accuses the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of aiding the process. He claims security operatives, including over 200 officers, stormed the Assembly complex and his residences in Agege and Ikeja, allegedly holding his family under lockdown during the impeachment.

“The court must urgently determine the legality of the Assembly’s leadership change, as it contradicts existing laws and parliamentary procedures,” Obasa argues in his suit.

Historic Leadership Shift in Lagos Assembly

Following Obasa’s impeachment, Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as the new Speaker of the House, making history as the first female Speaker in Lagos State. Meanwhile, the Assembly maintains that due process was followed and insists that Obasa was impeached for misconduct.

All eyes are on the court proceedings, which are yet to be scheduled.
