Inspector-General of Police Condemns Extortion and Misconduct, Vows Zero Tolerance for Corruption

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed concern over reports of extortion and high-handed behavior by some officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Speaking at a recent conference with senior police officers at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall in Abuja, the IGP emphasized the need for professionalism and accountability at all levels.

Strengthening Supervision and Accountability

Egbetokun directed Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners, and other senior officers to strictly monitor their subordinates to ensure professional conduct. He stressed that the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, and Complaint Response Unit (CRU) will intensify routine checks to tackle misconduct and corruption within the force. Officers found guilty will face strict disciplinary actions, with supervisors also held responsible for failures under their watch.

Warning Against Name-Dropping and Fraud

The IGP issued a stern warning against the unethical practice of using his or other senior officers’ names to extort money from the public. He assured that any officer involved in such fraudulent activities will face severe consequences, reaffirming the force’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and misconduct.

Public Collaboration Encouraged

The IGP also called on citizens to be vigilant and report any attempts of extortion involving his name. He stressed that the public plays a vital role in building a better police force through collaboration and accountability.
