Federal Government Suspends Senior Correctional Officers Amid Bobrisky Bribery Allegations

The Federal Government has suspended several senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following bribery allegations related to popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky. The controversy stems from viral accusations made by Martins Otse, a prominent social media influencer known as VeryDarkBlackMan (VDM).

Otse alleged in a series of videos that Bobrisky paid ₦15 million to certain officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to have money laundering charges against him dropped. The charges were linked to an incident in April, where Bobrisky was seen spraying large amounts of naira, leading to his sentencing of six months’ imprisonment. The influencer also claimed that Bobrisky paid millions of naira to secure favorable conditions in prison.

Bobrisky has denied all allegations, while both the EFCC and the NCoS have launched investigations into the matter.

On Thursday, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board announced the suspension of the officers involved, stating that this was necessary to allow for further investigation. In a statement signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, the Board assured the public that the results of the investigation would be made public once concluded.

Among those suspended are Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos State, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri. Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the facility.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has passed a resolution to investigate these allegations. The resolution came after a motion of urgent public importance was introduced by Patrick Umoh, representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State. In his address, Umoh expressed concern over the widespread allegations made by Otse against both the EFCC and the NCoS.
