NLC President Joe Ajaero Receives Second Summons from Nigerian Police

In a continued probe by the Nigeria Police Force, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, along with the union’s Secretary-General, Emmanuel Ugboaja, has been summoned once again for questioning. This latest invitation, dated August 28, 2024, comes just a day after Ajaero appeared at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to honor a prior summons.

The letter, signed by Commissioner of Police Rufus Alajide on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, indicated that the new invitation is related to ongoing investigations into allegations of “criminal intimidation, malicious damage to properties, and actions likely to cause a breach of public peace.”

According to the invitation, Ajaero is requested to appear at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) Complex, located at Shehu Shagari Way, Garki, Abuja, on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 11 a.m. He is expected to be accompanied by Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.

This follows an earlier invitation where Ajaero was questioned regarding allegations that included “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.” Ajaero, supported by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and other allies, responded to the initial summons at the Force Headquarters.

After his appearance, Ajaero addressed a large gathering of NLC members at the union’s headquarters. He reassured the crowd of the labour movement’s unwavering patriotism, asserting that the NLC remains one of Nigeria’s most dedicated organizations. “The labour movement is worth every sacrifice because of its deep-rooted patriotism and commitment,” Ajaero stated, emphasizing the NLC’s long-standing dedication to Nigeria, from the colonial era to the present day.
