Labour Maintains Strike Stance Despite Last-Minute Talks with NASS
Despite last-minute talks with the National Assembly, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared they will proceed with their planned nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3rd.
No Agreement Reached
After a four-hour meeting on Sunday evening, NLC President Festus Osifo stated that the unions lack the authority to call off the strike at this stage. He explained that the decision will be communicated to their various organs for further action.
Strike Looms Over Minimum Wage and Electricity Tariffs
The strike stems from the government’s failure to meet labour’s demands for a significant increase in the minimum wage and a reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike.
Unions Demand N497,000 Minimum Wage
Labour unions argue that the current N30,000 minimum wage is insufficient and have rejected the government’s latest offer of N60,000. They are pushing for a substantial increase to N497,000.
Negotiations Deadlocked
The decision to strike follows months of failed negotiations between the government and labour representatives.
