Seizing the Moment: African Ministers of Health Forge a Path Towards Global Health Security
In the wake of the profound shock caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which laid bare critical weaknesses in global health systems and exposed inequities and unhelpful behaviors, the time to act is now. We must seize this moment and avoid complacency that perpetuates cycles of panic and neglect.
Nigeria’s Health Minister, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate
Recently, Nigeria’s Health Minister, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, had the privilege of joining fellow African Ministers of Health at the High-Level Ministerial Consultative Meeting on the Pandemic Treaty NB and WGIHR Negotiations in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This gathering was made possible thanks to the AU deputy Chairperson, the esteemed Director General of Africa CDC, and the Honorable Ministers of Health from Zambia and Ethiopia, who facilitated a truly remarkable meeting.
The discussions focused on building consensus and forging a united front to advance Africa’s health security as part of the negotiations for a once-in-a-generation pandemic treaty. The goal is to achieve global health security on more equitable terms, benefiting both present and future generations.
African Ministers of Health Forge a Path Towards Global Health Security
Dr Pate asserted that “Africa is not seen in isolation but as an integral part of guaranteeing health security for the world in the face of potential and emerging pandemic threats”. The Health minister also claimed that “The energy, diverse intellect, and perspectives displayed by his fellow African Ministers of Health from all African Union Member States were truly inspiring.
Pate also Appreciated the African Ambassadors and Negotiators in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as the INB Bureau co-chairs and members, for their tireless efforts and constructive collaborations.
