2024 Annual Flood Outlook Unveiled: High Flood Risk Areas In Nigeria Revealed
The 2024 Annual Flood Outlook, themed “Promoting The Use Of Data Analytics & Modeling For Flood Risk Assessments & Food Security,” was recently unveiled in Abuja by the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev FNSE, FNICE. During the event, Prof. Utsev highlighted that 31 states with 148 LGAs are categorized as high flood risk areas, while 249 LGAs in 35 states and the FCT fall within moderate flood risk areas. Notable states at high risk include Adamawa, Anambra, Delta, Lagos, and others.

The Minister emphasized the significance of the Annual Flood Outlook, aligning it with the presidential agenda on food security. This initiative aims to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities and reduce exposure to climate-related disasters. Additionally, the administration has inaugurated the National Economic Council Adhoc Committee on Flood Mitigation, Adaptation, Preparedness, and Response to proactively develop a roadmap for enhancing Nigeria’s flood mitigation capabilities.
The event also underscored the need for mitigation measures to improve safety and reduce potential damages from floods. Furthermore, there was a call for diversification of subsequent Annual Flood Outlook publications to include drought and desertification, acknowledging their impact on climate change.
The unveiling was attended by disaster managers, academia, scholars, government and non-government stakeholders, and private sector representatives.
