Bobrisky Sentenced to Six Months Imprisonment Without Fine for Naira Abuse
Controversial figure Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been handed a six-month prison sentence without the option of a fine for the abuse of the Nigerian currency, the naira. The sentencing, delivered by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos, aims to deter others from similar acts of currency abuse and mutilation.

During the sentencing, Bobrisky confirmed his gender as male when questioned by the judge. Subsequently, he was directed to serve his prison term at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, with the commencement date set for March 24, 2024, the day of his arrest.
The conviction stemmed from Bobrisky’s guilty plea to four counts of naira abuse filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges detailed instances of currency abuse during social events, with the accused tampering with significant sums of money issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The judge had initially scheduled the sentencing for a later date, but it was postponed due to a public holiday declared by the Federal Government for the Eid-El-Fitri celebration.
