Court allows Former South African president, Zuma To Run For Election
A court in South Africa has today ordered that former president Jacob Zuma is allowed to run in May’s general elections, overturning an earlier ruling by electoral authorities barring him over a previous conviction.
The electoral court ruled in favour of 81 year old, Zuma, who is the frontrunner of a new opposition party, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK).
However, it did not provide an explanation of how the verdict was reached.
South Africa is to hold general elections on May 29, 2024 in what is expected to be the most competitive vote since the advent of democracy in 1994.

Zuma was earlier excluded by the electoral commission from the contest, arguing that the constitution bars anyone convicted of an offence and sentenced to more than 12 months’ imprisonment from running from office.
Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in jail in June 2021 after refusing to testify to a panel probing financial corruption and cronyism under his presidency.
