Russia affirms Vladmir Putin’s re-election as President

Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has today officially confirmed Vladimir Putin’s landslide victory in the presidential elections held from Mar. 15 to 17.

This was disclosed by the CEC Chairperson, Ella Pamfilova at a press conference announcing the official results with a total of 76.2 million votes for Vladmir Putin, accounting for 87.28% of the overall votes which was nearly 20 million more votes than in the 2018 presidential elections.

The Communist Party candidate Nikolai Kharitonov secured second place with 4.31% of the vote, followed by Vladislav Davankov from the liberal party New People and Leonid Slutsky from the Ultranationalist Party LDPR, winning 3.85% and 3.2% of votes, respectively.

She added that a record 87.5 million people had participated in the elections, representing 77.49% of eligible voters.

She emphasized that the polls were conducted with “minimal violations” under a “high-quality” election system, confirming the “undeniable legitimacy” of the process.

However, Russian opposition has denounced widespread election fraud and vote count manipulation, urging the West not to recognize Putin as the legitimate president of Russia but Pamfilova dismissed the Western accusations, stating that “unfriendly countries” were only pursuing their own “interests” and seeking to weaken Russia.

The inauguration of incumbent will be held on May 7 which will make him president until 2030.

Russian president has been in power since 2000, making him the longest serving leader in Russia or the Soviet Union since Joseph Stalin.
