“Court Grants Godwin Emefiele Travel Permission Amid Amended Charges”
Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted Godwin Emefiele, the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank, permission to travel outside the FCT while remaining within the country.
Emefiele’s bail terms, initially restricted to the FCT, were amended following a request through his lawyer, Matthew Bukka, SAN. The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) did not object, but emphasized that Emefiele must provide a written undertaking to stay in the country.
The charges against Emefiele have been increased from 6 to 20, now including criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit felony.

Previously granted bail on December 24, 2023, with a sum of N300 million and two sureties, Emefiele had been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre. His trial, related to alleged procurement fraud, had commenced before Justice Hamza Muazu.
Emefiele’s legal journey began in June, following his suspension as the CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu. Initially taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS), Emefiele challenged his detention at the FCT High Court, leading to the ultimatum for the DSS to either charge him or release him.
