Appeal Court Sacks Kano Governor Abba Yusuf, Declares APC’s Gawuna Winner

Boom RadioNG | November 17, 2023

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ousted Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, declaring the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Gawuna as the rightful winner.

A three-member panel ruled that the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) breached the constitution by endorsing Yusuf, who was not a party member. This decision affirmed the tribunal’s judgment from September 20.

INEC had initially declared Yusuf the winner of the March 18, 2023 election with 1,019,602 votes, defeating Gawuna who received 890,705 votes.

The APC had approached the Tribunal, alleging electoral malpractice. The tribunal invalidated 165,663 votes for Yusuf, contesting under NNPP, citing lack of signatures or stamps by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Consequently, his votes were reduced to 853,939, while his APC rival Nasir Ganuwa’s remained at 890,705.
