Malawi President Suspends International Travel for Government Officials Amid Economic Turmoil

Boom RadioNG | November 16, 2023

In a bid to save money amidst Malawi’s ongoing economic crisis, President Lazarus Chakwera has announced the immediate suspension of all international travel for himself and his government officials. This decision follows the country’s recent devaluation of its currency and the securing of a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bolster its ailing economy.

The travel ban extends to all cabinet ministers, principal secretaries, and other top government officials. Those currently abroad have been ordered to return home promptly. Additionally, fuel allowances for senior government officials have been slashed by 50%.

Malawi’s economy has been grappling with severe challenges, including an acute shortage of petrol and diesel, coupled with high inflation. The country’s currency devaluation has further exacerbated the situation, putting a strain on government finances.

The sweeping austerity measures implemented by President Chakwera aim to curb unnecessary spending and redirect resources towards addressing the country’s economic woes. The IMF loan is expected to provide some relief, but the path to economic recovery remains long and arduous.
