FIFA To Try Out Offside VAR at 2021 Arab Cup in Qatar

BoomRadioNG | November 29, 2021

Football’s world governing body, FIFA has announced it’s willingness to try out a dedicated offside Video Assistant Referee which is a semi-automatic detection of offside using specialised cameras at the Arab Cup in Qatar.

It would work using a camera system that would be set up on the roof of each stadium and information relayed to a video assistant who can then alert the referee.

“Limb-tracking data extracted from the video will be sent to the operations rooms and the calculated offside line and detected kick-point is provided,” said Johannes Holzmueller, FIFA director of football technology and innovation.

The final decision will however always be delegated to the officials in the VAR room and the referee.

If the results are positive, the system may then be used at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Arab Cup is to be played across four stadiums in Qatar and begins on Tuesday, 30th November, 2021.
